Marlins triumphant at Open Water

28-07-2014 13:37 by Mark McGowen

On Sunday 20th July, 7 swimmers from March Marlins swimmers dodged the electric thunderstorms to complete the Open Water Championships held in Norwich.

Ashleigh Lavender and Katie McGowen swam 3000m in Whitlingham lake with Ashleigh picking up a silver medal in Cambridgeshire and Katie achieving gold. Gemma McGowen swam 2000m and also came away with the gold for Cambridgeshire. March Marlins had 4 swimmers that completed the 1500m with Chloe Richardson getting bronze, Ashleigh Lavender picking up 4th and Lydia Gray getting 5th for the county. Nat Cook also picked up a bronze medal in the boys event. Finally, the 800m was swum by Molly McGowen who achieved silver medal position in her first Open Water Event.

Overall, March Marlins had a very successful year at the annual open water event despite the thunderstorms that caused the 5000m event to be called off and other swimmers to be pulled out of the lake. Next year, the team manager and coach hopes for even more swimmers from the squad to participate to gain even more medal positions.
