SFL A Final Winners

The A Final of the Senior Fenland League provided a nail biting, heart racing spectacle by the March Marlins Swimming team at the weekend.

With 38 individual races plus 8 relays, many of the swimmers competed in several races. A strong team resulted in many first and second placings with 15 personal bests gained which is an achievement in itself when swimming at such a competitive level.

Notably, Weronika Mikolajewska, Dannii Rayner and Reece Simpson all participated in 7 races with Rayner achieving first placings in them all. Reece came away with 2 personal bests in 2 of his individual races and Weronika gained personal best times in her 3 individual swims. In addition, Tom Hanley, who swam in 6 events, finished with 2 personal bests and 5 first placings. Chloe Cook swam to victory in the 100m Individual Medley and the 100m butterfly with her part in the 3 relays leading to first positions. Una Ansome and Henry Gooch finished with a personal best time in their respective backstroke races with Connor Rickard taking a first place and personal best time in the 50m breaststroke. Jude Staton followed up with personal best times in the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly and Graham Shaw came first in the 100m Inidivual Medley, also picking up a best time. Mark Thompson took part in 2 races including the Senior Free Relay.

Fantastic swims from Garry Mavin in the Open 100m Freestyle and Butterfly races gained him second positions with Kiera Simpson also coming second in her 100m freestyle. Olivia Tunley swam in 4 races including 2 relays whilst Hattie Carter-Kitchingham took part in 3 races including the Junior 4x25m Free Relay which resulted in a second placing. Jessica Rayner and Jacob Cowin both took part in 3 races with first positions in the Senior 4x25m Free Relays. Jacob also took first place in the 100m backstroke. Georgia Ambrose contributed to a first in the Ladies Senior 4x25m Medley Relay as well as the Senior Free Relay. Theo Liversedge took part in 2 races including the Junior Free Relay alongside 3 other boys.

However, the most tense, exciting moment came at the finale of the competiton during the Mixed Cannon Relay which proved the strength and stamina of the Marlins team. Initially, the race saw Marlins in second and third positions against the other teams with each swimmer fighting to gain time on their competitors. Weronika Mikolajewska, Jude Staton and Una Ansome started the speed then Reece Simpson, Chloe Cook, Tom Hanley, Dannii Rayner and Graham Shaw brought it home with Shaw racing to the end pipping the others to the post. A phenomenal end to a fantastic evening of swimming. Results; March Marlins 185, Wisbech 157, Thetford 144, Diss Otters 133, Ely 84.
